Sweden continues to advance as one of the countries at the forefront of cycling infrastructure, for example the new and quite incredible bicycle garage located next to the central transit station in the city of Uppsala.

The environmentally certified building, designed by Tengbom, one of the world’s most innovative architectural firms, is itself an incredible feat of sustainable architecture. And with thousands of commuters passing through the station every day, it was imperative to build a facility to ensure that many of those trips to the station were done by bicycle.

The bicycle garage has room for a whopping 1,200 bicycles to lock up securely in the facility.

The garage has two floors and wooden ramps connect each floor, so it is possible to cycle between them.

The bicycle garage has an exposed wooden structure, clad in glass facades with black steel moldings.

Solar cells are placed on the roof covered with sedum. While absorbing excess water from heavy rains, the roof also functions as a fourth facade to the many high-rise buildings that surround the bicycle garage.

This is nothing new for Sweden. Years ago Momentum wrote about a 700 bike garage that opened in Stockholm.

Unsurprisingly, Uppsala, located near Stockholm, was named Global Climate City of the Year. After all, bikes are one of the best weapons we have to stop the climate crisis.
