AICTE requests bank statements from engineering schools

The regional office of the All India Council for Technical Education has requested details of the appointment order issued to a faculty of Vivekanandha College of Engineering for Women and her bank account statement.

The board asked for “the bank statement of the College/Trust accounts showing the debit entry for payment of salary to faculty members”.

The letter follows the death of an assistant professor, Professor S. Ravi, who allegedly committed suicide in March 2020 because he was in debt and the college had failed to pay him his due salary. The case has been brought before the National Human Rights Commission and the Department of Higher Education has also opened an investigation into the matter.

The council’s recent letter follows a complaint by KM Karthik, president of the All India Private College Employees’ union, who alleged that the college had failed to pay faculty in accordance with AICTE standards.

In another related matter, the Directorate of Technical Education had a few weeks ago sent a letter to Anna University urging it to ensure that the colleges pay the salaries stipulated by AICTE to their faculty. and to return their original certificates after examination.

Mr. Karthik said his complaint was based on reading the college’s statement of accounts for salary paid to faculty. The council had received several complaints from teachers at the college about the college’s low salaries, AICTE regional officer Mr. Sundaresan said in his letter to the college dated October 3.
